27A – Reading Reflection No. 3
Book: The Art of Social Media: Power Tips for Power Users, Guy Kawasaki
1. The general theme of the book was how to develop and grow a social media presence in the form of a business in order to increase revenue and attention. The author, Guy Kawasaki, is the chief evangelist for Apple and is an expert in social media marketing.
2. The book connected and enhanced the concept of using your known resources to grow your business and exploit an opportunity. It revolves around the importance of promotion, and promoting for free using social media. The cost of starting to market to an intended audience is zero. The book also touched on subjects such as self promotion and increasing your social capitol, in which we have spent time in this class discussing in regards to marketing a specific product.
3. If I had to design an exercise for this class based on this book, I would prompt all students to design a professional social media account. This account would focus specifically on the company or product they have been discussing throughout the course. Students would also interact with other accounts in hopes to grow the platform. This would help students to self-promote themselves as well as their product with zero cost involved.
4. Although I did not read the full book, I thought it was interesting that it highlights the importance of just showcasing yourself and your personality in order to grow your business. Along with this, making sure to focus on what your audience wants to hear/learn and what you want to share. It is surprising to see the success of social media platforms in advertising major as well as small companies. Everyone has an opportunity to display their brand on social media without any prior resources, finances, or even special skills.

I read the Kawasaki book too and like how the book highlighted the importance of being yourself. I think that's the one way many people do social media wrong is not being yourself. Social media is filled with catfishes and trolls. Their goal is to spread fake news across all platforms. This is why if you want to grow your business you need to be genuine and authentic. That is the only way you meet clients and customers. Kawasaki does a great job in this book teaching online users how to be authentic and how to send positive messages out to the world.
ReplyDeleteTaylor,
ReplyDeleteI also read Kawaski's book for a past reflection assignment. One part of your post that I liked the most was your exercise design. Creating social media accounts for our business ideas throughout the course is a smart way to introduce students to the world of networking and marketing your brand. Increasing your social capital is really important for the business world.
Hi Taylor,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading and learning about Guy Kawasaki. I never knew social media and marketing could be so powerful in boosting a company/product to the top. Exploiting opportunities is a great example of how entrepreneurs take action to grow their business. I believe social media is tool for most companies like apple to advertise and market their products directly to the customer. Great overall post!
