6A- Practicing Opportunity Identification

Economic Opportunities

"What the Stock Market May Be Missing About the Coronavirus"
a. Source: Article listed on foreignpolicy.com and another from the Wall Street Journal
b. The article contained information regarding the recent outbreak of coronavirus in China. Specifically, it recognized the effects that the disease may have on the stock market and investor behavior. This suggests an opportunity for investors to take advantage of decreasing stocks and invest possible capitol if pursuing the belief that the outbreak will be short-lived.
c. The prototypical customer is investors seeking to boost sources from the economy, businesses and medical professionals with relation to the disease and its effects.
d. This opportunity is not difficult to exploit, but predicting the consequences of the opportunity is. Because of the large amount of uncertainty in the stock market and of the disease growth itself, it is extremely difficult to tell whether the disease will produce widespread economic impact and long-term effects on the market.
Why did I see the opportunity? I saw this opportunity from carefully analyzing various perspectives written in the information read, along with speaking to my father, who does investment work in his career and spends time analyzing market trends.

"The Impact of Climate Change on Local Agricultural Businesses"
a. Source: Article listed in the New York Times
b. The increase in risk related to climate change has produced many potential issues, including loss of crop yield for agricultural land, leading to decreased revenue. This suggests an opportunity for possible solutions such as campaigns and outreach programs on a local level.
c. The prototypical customer is the future generation and anyone affected by the growing effects of climate change. Further, local agricultural businesses and those associated with the agriculture industry are heavily impacted by this.
d. The opportunity is relatively easy to exploit because campaign/outreach efforts can be done in a timely manner, with little resources, and on a local level.
Why did I see the opportunity? I saw this opportunity because of my proactive nature and desire to make a change in my community. I believe those who are not open to change may not share this perspective and see the potential opportunity.

Regulatory Changes

"Employee Privacy"
a. Source: Article listed on paychex.com stating the top ten regulatory issues for businesses in 2020.
b. Employers need to be more mindful of various privacy-related regulations recently established, such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). This suggests a possible opportunity for creating software that notifies employers of privacy regulations based on the residence of their employees. For example, if the employee lives in California, the software would notify the company of that employee's rights as a resident of CA under the CCPA.
c. The prototypical customer would be large companies who have a variety of employees from various states.
d. This opportunity is relatively difficult to exploit as it would require technical skills as well as possible investments. It would probably have a large time to revenue ratio because implementing new software is not a fast process.
Why did I see the opportunity? I saw this opportunity because I could recognize the issue employers would have sorting through a large number of employees and distinguishing privacy protocol based on residence. It took analyzation and critical thinking to attempt to simplify a confusing task.

"Marijuana Legalization"
a. Source: Article from Frontiers in Plant Science Journal
b. Medical and recreational marijuana usage in the workplace based on continuing enaction of legislation at state and local jurisdictions remains difficult to keep up with. This suggests an opportunity to expand on the existing parameters of drug testing programs and modify based on the current accommodations of those who use marijuana for medical purposes, possibly by showing the strains or types of marijuana in the bloodstream more specifically to identify the usage.
c.  The prototypical customer is drug testing programs as well as all companies who use those programs.
d. This opportunity is difficult to exploit as it would require scientific testing and innovation. It would probably require a large amount of time to implement and begin using.
Why did I see this opportunity? I saw this opportunity from researching more about the drug testing programs currently in existence and educating myself about the protocol in place. While this would require much more scientific knowledge and understanding to further pursue, I was able to identify an issue and a possible solution just through education and analysis.

  1. Hi Taylor,

I really enjoyed reading your four different opportunities to exploit relating to economic and regulatory trends. The coronavirus is a very big problem currently and many people are trying to figure out how to limit the impact. I also chose to write about this virus because it is effecting many different businesses. I found it interesting how you examined the stock market's perspective of the virus. Not too many stocks have taken drastic enough hits yet to want to start investing in cause of the virus. I think that it is something to look out for in the next couple of weeks. Overall, I really enjoyed reading all of your trends.

  2. Hi Taylor,

I really enjoyed the opportunities that you chose. The opportunity that I found most interesting is the first opportunity on the effect that the coronavirus could have on the stock market. The introduction of the coronavirus in China and the effect that it has had on their citizens directly effects business worldwide considering a lot of our business and product production roots from China. This is definitely catching the eyes of investors and could be something that has a large effect on the stock market. Great post!
