8A- Solving The Problem

Opportunity: There is an opportunity to decrease gym intimidation in commercial gym settings in attempts to increase member frequency and satisfaction.

Product/Service: I believe one extremely beneficial way to reduce gym intimidation and improve confidence is to workout with someone else. This way, most if not all the various reasons associated with gym intimidation are resolved; including issues of insecurity, sustainability, confusion, and embarrassment. The product is an outreach effort from a commercial gym or large fitness corporation in attempts to pair members together with a gym 'buddy'. This will consist of either a written or online survey in which members of the club will fill out information regarding their fitness preferences/style, experience levels, workout time preference, interests, age, etc. Pairs will be matched from the corporation to all paying members. In order to increase awareness and participation of the program, the gym could suggest a personal training session included with the paired 'buddies' if they agree to fill out the survey.

  1. Taylor,

This is a really great and thought-out idea. Gym intimidation can be major factor that makes people not visit the gym often or even at all. I like this idea of pairing together gym buddies based on their experience, style, and interests. It eases that intimidation and paires somebody with a buddy that's just like them and can encourage them to workout. Good job!

  2. Hi Taylor! You brought up a very common issue that occurs in gyms every day. Many people are too intimidated to start working out so they put it off entirely and eventually give up their gym membership. By implementing the “gym buddy” idea it could definitely evoke a more positive atmosphere in gyms and will allow people to begin their healthy lifestyle as well as ensure the gym maintains its members.

  3. Hi Taylor,

I think that you have come up with a great solution to gym intimidation. I also think that this idea hits many other issues such as people being consistent with going to the gym and having a set reason for not being able to skip. I think that pairing the right people together could be pretty hard, but with the right research and having enough questions to truly gauge the clients it could be done.

  4. Hi Taylor,

I completely agree that when someone goes to a gym for the first time and they don't know anyone it can be very intimidating. With that being said, I think you are right that working out with a gym partner would help decrease that feeling of intimidation. Having someone to talk to while you workout can be quite enjoyable and allows you to not feel like you are alone.

  5. Hi Taylor,

I can completely relate to your problem in the gym! It can make almost anyone uncomfortable when others are intimidating you in the gym. I always go with a partner, I don't have the motivation to do it myself. When I go into the gym by myself, I notice a lot more intimidation going on because I'm not focused and occupied with my partner. There are gyms like Planet Fitness that strive behind the idea of the no-judgement policy. Your idea is a very interesting one and I think it could actually work in certain settings.
