5A- Identifying Local Opportunities

Newspaper used: Tampa Bay Times

Story 1-

1. Title: After Abrupt Lucky's Market Exit, What Happens to its Tampa Bay Stores?

2. Link: https://www.tampabay.com/news/business/2020/01/29/after-abrupt-luckys-market-exit-what-happens-to-its-tampa-bay-stores/

3. Story: Lucky's Market is a chain of organic grocery stores in Florida and had construction permits in Clearwater and Tampa for a future store. After beginning construction, the company halted continuation and had residents confused and looking for answers.

4. Problem: Specific locations of Lucky's Market in and around Tampa Bay are abandoning construction after the company declared bankruptcy. Aldi and Publix did not take over these locations, thus leaving developers and landlords in massive debt and struggling to find a buyer.

5. Who has the problem?: Landlords and developers of the land under construction

Story 2-

1. Title: Cybercrimes nearly double in Florida, costing the average victim more than $7,000

2. Link: https://www.tampabay.com/news/business/2020/01/28/cybercrimes-nearly-double-in-florida-costing-the-average-victim-more-than-7000/

3. Story: The amount of cyber fraud and other internet-related attacks is increasing massively in Florida as well as the United States. The known number is just a fraction of all attacks, as this is only the percentage of crimes reported to the FBI.

4. Problem: The financial toll due to cyber crimes has dramatically increased, showing an 88% increase from 2015 to 2018. Because of the diversity of ways hackers can commit crimes online, it is becoming increasingly hard to stop. This is especially detrimental to businesses.

5. Who has the problem?: Anyone who owns an electronic device that can access the internet, all businesses

Story 3-

1. Title: East Lake residents sue after Tarpon Springs annexes land for developer

2. Link: https://www.tampabay.com/news/pinellas/2020/01/27/east-lake-residents-sue-after-tarpon-springs-annexes-land-for-developer/

3. Story: Pinellas County defined the borders of the East Lake community in order to preserve natural features and limit sprawl with the East Lake Tarpon Overlay District in 2012. Recently, a development group purchased land near the border and asked the city if they could expand beyond the borders to develop homes. This would allow the company to double the number of homes being built with purchased land.

4. Problem: Members of the East Lake community were upset with this news and decided to sue the city for agreeing to annex the land under borders. Because the city previously defined the borders in order to prevent sprawl and preserve environmental features, they argue that it is unethical for them to annex land. This, they argue, would have major impacts on traffic, stormwater, wildlife and the rural way of life in the community.

5. Who has the problem?: Members of the East Lake community in favor of preserving their land, the business attempting to expand, future residents of this community

Story 4-

1. Title: He was walking down Central Avenue in St. Pete. Then a man randomly slashed his face.

2. Link: https://www.tampabay.com/news/crime/2020/01/29/he-was-walking-down-central-avenue-in-st-pete-then-a-man-randomly-slashed-his-face/

3. Story: Derek Lawrence, a resident of St. Pete, was walking down the street when a man came up to him and slashed his face with a knife. At first unaware of what had happened, he argued with the man until he realized the extent of the gash. After no response or help from surrounding citizens, Lawrence sprinted and dialed 911. The attacker was found, charged, and Lawrence got stitches for the wound.

4. Problem: Lawrence stated that multiple people saw the interaction occur, but did nothing. Not only is the lack of help from other citizens concerning, but the number of small attacks from transients in downtown St. Pete is concerning, according to Lawrence. He felt as if a large number of residents felt unsafe walking and that violence as a whole may be increasing in this area.

5. Who has the problem?: All St. Pete residents, law enforcement, surrounding businesses downtown

Story 5-

1. Title: Hardball: Rays threaten to block redevelopment of Tropicana Field

2. Link: https://www.tampabay.com/news/st-petersburg/2020/01/30/hardball-rays-threaten-to-block-redevelopment-of-tropicana-field/

3. Story: The Tampa Bay Rays have denied the expansion of land on Tropicana Field due to their firm exclusivity contract held until 2027. Because the city of St. Petersburg refused to allow the Rays to have a split-season in both Tampa Bay and Montreal, the Rays exercised their right to abide by the contract and prevent any redevelopment of Tropicana Field.

4. Problem: The Rays believe the only way to save baseball in the Tampa Bay Area is to have a split season in Tampa and Montreal to expand the fanbase. The city refused to agree to this under their exclusivity contract, thus the team is in danger of ending. The city's solution to this issue and idea to create proceeds cannot happen without approval from the team.

5. Who has the problem?: Devoted Rays fans, the Rays team, the city of St. Petersburg, developers of Tropicana Field, citizens of St. Petersburg, the potential stadium in Montreal.

  1. Hi Taylor,

I like your post on identifying local opportunities because they were so many different topics about different industries. I like the layout of the post and you tell the audience what newspaper which is Tampa Bay. The most interesting/relevant story for me was cybercrime is definitely increasing and it has become so much easier for hacker to attack or steal private information nowadays. To improve/ feedbacks I would say keep doing what you are doing you have great ideas and you follow the instructions very well.
